Shrub & Tree Trimming Services
Overgrown trees and shrubs don't just look untidy — they develop structural problems, crowd out neighbouring plants, and become harder to manage every year you leave them. We provide shrub trimming, hedge cutting, and tree pruning across Nepean, Barrhaven, Kanata, Manotick, and Riverside South, with cuts timed to each plant's growth cycle. Every job is handled by Malcolm Grace, a credentialled Horticulturist who understands how Ottawa's climate affects when and how hard to cut.
Tree Trimming
Trees in Ottawa's urban neighbourhoods take a beating — ice storms, late frosts, and root competition from neighbouring properties all create structural weaknesses that go unnoticed until a branch comes down. We remove deadwood and hazardous limbs before they become a problem, thin canopies to improve light penetration and airflow, and shape young trees early so they develop strong structure rather than needing corrective work later. For older or established trees, we assess each removal cut for its effect on the whole tree — taking the wrong branch at the wrong time can open a tree to disease or create a new structural risk.

Hedge Cutting
A hedge that goes uncut for a season or two doesn't just look overgrown — it starts to thin at the base as the top shades out the lower branches, and once that happens it takes years to recover. We cut to precise dimensions on a seasonal schedule, typically two to three times per year depending on species and your desired form. Cedar hedges common in Ottawa neighbourhoods need careful timing — cutting too late in the season leaves fresh growth exposed to early frost. We work with both formal clipped styles and looser natural forms, adjusting technique to what the plant and your property call for.

Shrub Shaping
Shrub shaping is more than aesthetics — selective pruning removes crossing branches that cause wounds, opens the interior to airflow that reduces fungal disease, and directs the plant's energy into the growth you actually want. We hand prune rather than shear wherever possible, which produces a more natural result and avoids the flush of weak soft growth that mechanical shearing encourages. For flowering shrubs — lilacs, forsythia, viburnum, and others common in Ottawa gardens — we schedule cuts immediately after bloom to protect next year's buds. For shrubs that have outgrown their space, we can assess whether hard renewal pruning is an option or whether replacement makes more sense.
