Garden Maintenance in Barrhaven, Nepean & Ottawa South

Regular garden maintenance is what separates a garden that looks good in May from one that holds through October. We work with homeowners across Nepean, Barrhaven, Kanata, Manotick, and Riverside South, returning on a set schedule to handle the groundwork: weeding, pruning, deadheading, fertilizing, and pest monitoring. Ottawa's growing season moves fast — beds that are clean in June can be overtaken by August without consistent attention. Every visit is personally overseen by Malcolm Grace, a credentialled Horticulturist with over eight years of hands-on garden experience. Learn more about our approach.

Garden Weeding and Cultivating

Weeding, Raking, and Cultivating

Clean beds and well-worked soil are the foundation of everything else. On every visit we hand-pull weeds before they set seed, rake out debris that harbours disease and insects over winter, and cultivate the soil surface to break up compaction and improve water absorption. In Ottawa's clay-heavy soils, surface cultivation makes a real difference to how well your plants establish and how quickly beds drain after rain. Staying on top of weeds on a two-week cycle is far less work than reclaiming a bed that's been left for a month. For persistent or large-scale weed problems, see our dedicated weed control service.

Expert Pruning

Pruning done at the wrong time does more harm than no pruning at all. We schedule cuts around each plant's growth cycle — spring-blooming shrubs like lilacs and forsythia are pruned immediately after flowering, while summer bloomers and ornamental grasses are cut back in early spring before new growth emerges. On maintenance visits we deadhead perennials to extend blooming, remove crossing or rubbing branches before they cause damage, and shape shrubs to keep your garden looking intentional rather than overgrown. In Ottawa, where the growing season is compressed, getting pruning timing right is what keeps plants productive from May through October.

Fertilizing and Disease/IPM Solutions

Fertilizing without knowing your soil is guesswork. We assess what your plants actually need before applying anything — nitrogen-heavy feeding on an already-stressed plant will push soft growth that attracts aphids, not the strong establishment you want. We use slow-release and organic amendments where appropriate, timed to Ottawa's season: early spring for cool-season perennials, post-bloom for shrubs, and a light fall application for beds that need winter preparation. On the pest and disease side, we scout on every visit rather than waiting for visible damage. We keep interventions targeted so your garden stays healthy without unnecessary treatments.
